Synchronizing wirelessly using Bluetooth technology on your handheld.

I just purchased a Palm Pilot- a Tungsten E2. I finally figured out how to sync it with my Macintosh, a G4 Cube running OS X 10.4.10. The problem I'm having is that after I sync the E2 with my Mac, when I try to open Palm Desktop software the Palm Desktop software doesn't open. The splash screen appears and the cursor turns into a spinning ball. I tried waiting for the program for five minutes and it still didn't open. I trashed my User Data file and tried opening Palm Desktop again.

The program did open, but because I trashed the User Data file there were no contacts or calendar items listed. So, I tried Hotsyncing again with the E2, since the E2 is holding all my contacts and calendar items. After the Hotsync, I tried opening Palm Desktop again and again it wouldn't open. The splash screen appears and the cursor just spins. So, it seems like somehow the User Data is being corrupted when it's Hostsyncing. I have no idea how to solve the problem, though.

I have no idea what is causing Palm Desktop to choke. I welcome any ideas on what to do. Thanks, Mirsky.

I am a long-time Mac and Palm Pilot user. Unfortunately, Palm hasn't updated its Desktop software in years. That software is crap, and not just for the Mac; its crap for Windows too. I suggest you check and consider buying a copy of their Missing Sync, but you need to verify if its compatible with your Tungsten E2 first.

This will allow you to sync your data between iCal, Address Book and a memo program that Palm offers for the Mac. It isn't perfect, but its eons a head of the Palm Desktop software. Click to expand.Mirsky, I agree with Shawn's assessment wrt Palm Desktop software. It isn't the greatest.

However, it does work on OS X. I use it with both hardwired USB and Bluetooth Hot Syncing, coincidently with an E2. You may have a corruption in the Hot Sync settings, Palm Desktop installation, or (worst) a corruption in your E2 data. In any event, some things to try (one at a time): 1) Launch the PD from another user on your Mac. If it works here, you've got something corrupted in your primary user account and/or a directory permissions conflict.

2) Trash your entire '/Documents/Palm/Users' folder. This includes the Hot Sync settings as well as your data file. 3) Trash your '/Library/Preferences/Palm Desktop Info' file. 4) Re-install the Palm Desktop software. As I recall, some of the older versions of the PD had some issues with directory permissions which could cause the beach ball. I recall there were multiple releases of the 4.2.1 software as well. BTW - the latest PD is 4.2.1 Rev D.

If none of these work, you may have corruption in your E2 data. To narrow it down, start again with an empty user data file. Then, try altering your Hot Sync settings to upload and over-write only one of the E2's data blocks (e.g. Mark the rest as 'do nothing'. If this works, try adding others until it fails.

At least you'll know where the corrupted data resides. Click to expand.Mirsky- I have a Tungston T3 and a T/X plus some older versions. Each has its own problem, but the spinning ball is not one of them.

Can you open the Palm Desktop software before doing the Hotsync? One thing to try is to launch it prior to doing the Hotsync, and leave it open. You can activate Hotsync by going to the Palm Desktop Hotsync menu and choosing Setup. Do you leave your computer on all the time? If so, try restarting to see if that makes a difference when running Palm Desktop.
